School Story

Our school in brief

Heysham High School serves the Heysham, Morecambe and Lancaster areas.  We are a mixed, 11-19 Specialist Sports College with approximately 1100 students on roll, including 160+ in the Sixth Form, whose members enjoy recently refurbished facilities in their own designated block. Our pastoral system works on a House model, with five houses, Balmoral, Buckingham, Osborne, Sandringham and Windsor.   We have a ten form entry (two form groups in each of the five houses) and our numbers increase year on year.

Our site covers approximately seventeen acres and is open and pleasant, with plenty of space and green areas.  The buildings are light and well cared for, and several areas have been either refurbished or recently built, including our dedicated Maths Block.  There are interactive whiteboards in every classroom and class sets of laptops which can be used wherever they are needed.  All areas of the school are fully accessible, with ramps and three lifts.

We have two kitchen/dining areas, both of which have been recently developed, and our students enjoy a range of appetising and nutritious meals at breakfast and lunch.  We have a cashless catering system which makes serving food much more efficient and allows our free school meals students the anonymity they deserve.

As a designated Specialist Sports College, our facilities are second to none in the area. and we have an extensive community dimension, with excellent community links.  We have a floodlit 3G Astroturf pitch, which means that we can play outdoor sports all year round and can provide the local community with first class recreational facilities.  We operate a state of the art fitness suite, La3, which is open for public membership outside school hours and we have a brand new tentile sports hall which is in constant use, either with our students or with community groups.

We have also just added a Hair Salon (1HS) and Beauty Salon (Tranquility) to our teaching facilities, and these are available to the public for styling and beauty treatments at certain times in the week.

We are also very proud of our facilities and reputation in the Performing Arts, and we hold frequent musical and dramatic events throughout the year, both in school and in the community.  Our staff organise frequent local, national and international trips, to broaden the educational and cultural horizons of our students.

We have been running the Duke of Edinburgh training scheme for some years now and have students who have passed or are training at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

We offer our students a broad curriculum which we believe is unsurpassed in the area.  We are proud to be non-selective and inclusive, and our students achieve their potential, whether that be a place at a red brick university or employment in the wider world.
